CTA 2011: Managed Access for Cell Phones
Posted 11.06.2011
When asked what keeps Mississippi's Commissioner of Corrections awake at night, Commissioner Epps' response is "...it's not the budget, it's not overcrowding - it's the burgeoning use of unauthorized cell phones by the inmate population." This presentation provides a detailed review of this insidious problem, including graphs & statistics of the adverse impact from a fiscal and operational perspective. Increased confiscation of the contraband, increases in the reallocation of already over-tasked correctional officers' time to perform searches, and the impact on inmate telephone commissions are all problems. Audrey McAfee, MIS Director of the MS DOC, provides an overview of their chosen solution - managed access technology. This session gives a comparison of its advantages over similar solutions, obstacles encountered & overcome involving cell phone carriers and regulatory requirements, the status of the project, and future plans. Also presenting are Tim Murphy, VP of Sales, Managed Access Solutions at Tecore Networks, and Andrew Merrill. Part of the 2011 Corrections Technology Association annual meeting in Daytona Beach, Florida.
